Ruinpubs were originally characteristic of the 7th district of Budapest (called Erzsébetváros, 'Elizabethtown'), but for a while they have been expanding into the other districts, on both sides of the river. How, then, could the 9th (Ferencváros, 'Francistown') be an exception?
(But let's not forget that the building that housed the legendary Kultiplex along with Tilos Radio was demolished at great speed a few years ago -- there is still only a littered wasteland in its place.)
Liliom street and its whole neighbourhood is not exactly unknown for people who'd like a little culture and entertainment: those who like the contemporary arts frequent Trafó, Tűzraktár was also located here, and now we have Fairy Factory. There is real ruinpub life in the courtyard of this entertainment and fairy-producing facility: drinks at a reasonable price, grilled food from Kétker étkem, and bikers in unlimited numbers. When it's raining you can go to the basement; exhibitions, acoustic concerts are also organized here. The Hangar houses concerts and film screenings.
The visitor cannot really help but notice that most of the customers and the bands who play here are returning visitors who look as though they really felt at home here. This is no accident: there plenty of places where bikes can be left, there are tools available and the staff also know how to fix a bike; concerts and other musical performances are either free or are offered at rather friendly prices; and the homepage has a separate 'Lost and Found' section.
